Mr. Swapan Bhattacharjee was born on 02 February 1952 in an aristocratic Brahman family of Monirampur Upazila, Jashore. His father’s name is Late Sudhir Bhatacharjee and mother’s name is Late Usha Rani Bhattacharjee. His wife, Tandra Bhattacharjee, is general secretary of Jashore Zila Mohila Parishad. Among his four brothers and three sisters, the elder brother, Mr. Pijush Kanti Bhattacharjee (former MP and a freedom fighter) is a presidium member of Bangladesh Awami League. His late brother Advocate Aron Bhattacharjee, a freedom fighter, was a renowned lawyer and he participated in the liberation war as a navy-commando. Mr. Swapan Bhattacharjee completed his SSC from Moshiahati Secondary School in 1968, HSC from Noapara College in 1970 and graduation under Rajshahi University in 1973. He is blessed with a son and a daughter.
From the student life he was involved in the politics of Awami League. He actively participated in the liberation war. Due to the protestation against the brutal killing of the father of nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family on 15th August 1975, he along with former president Late Zillur Rahman, former minister Late Abdur Razzak and many others was imprisoned for a long nineteen months after being arrested on 27th October 1975. In his long political career, he played important roles in different positions of upazila and district level politics. He has significant participation in the promotion of various social organizations. He was a central advisor of Kapotakkho Lions International Club and a founding member of Kapotakkho Eye Hospital. He was also a former chair of the Jashore Zila Puja Udjapon Parishad. He is the district convener of Jashore Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Unity Council and was a treasurer of Jashore Zila Awami League. He has also played a lead role in proliferating the light of education in Monirampur. He is a founding member of Monirampur Women’s College and the founder of Gopalpur School and college.
He received the Best Upazila Chairman Award by the Honorable President of Bangladesh in 2009. He visited many countries in the world including India, Nepal, China, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Dubai, UAE, Russia, Oman, Germany, Austria, Italy, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Switzerland, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Spain, Finland, Egypt, Australia and Vatican City.
Having got elected in the 10th national parliament election, he has performed his duties as a member of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Liberation War Affairs from 2014 to 2019. In the 11th national parliament election, he became elected again and is currently acting as the honorable state minister of the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives.
